The Squire Limited Edition Medieval Sword (Oakeshott Type XVI)
Type XVI swords were developed to make good use of an acute thrusting point, while still being dedicated to cutting.
The Prince and the Squire swords are built on the same blade. A wide base, a deep and well defined fuller and an outer third of the blade that gradually curves to an awl shaped point, makes this sword into an efficient cut and thrust design. The gradual diminishing of the mass towards the point results in a sword with a very precise and agile point control.
The Squire version has a hilt that is simple but very subtle in its shape. A straight cross of square section with gently swelling surfaces and trumpeting ends harmonizes well with a pommel of Oakeshott type K: a wheel pommel that is flat and wide with a small central hub. This is a hilt configuration that is typical for the period when this type of sword was at its most popular: 1300-1350.
